About the Artist
Federation of Canadian Artists gallery
Julie McDowell is an international artist whose practice is rooted in a deep appreciation of colour, form, and material exploration. Originally from the United Kingdom, she studied Fine Art at Lancaster University, before relocating to the Pacific Northwest of Canada. The region’s striking landscapes and shifting atmospheres continue to influence her creative journey.
Working primarily in acrylic, Julie’s practice is characterized by constant experimentation and evolution. In addition to painting, she has developed a strong interest in mono-printing and the incorporation of hand-printed and painted papers into her compositions. These layered approaches create textured, multidimensional surfaces that invite close observation and engagement, encouraging viewers to discover unexpected details beneath the surface.
Her work often balances spontaneity with intention, reflecting both her intuitive process and her thoughtful exploration of technique. Each piece becomes a dialogue between colour, texture, and form—an ongoing conversation that evokes curiosity and sparks reflection.
Julie’s art is best understood as an unfolding journey: one that embraces change, values experimentation, and continuously seeks new ways to connect with viewers through visual language.
